DAN BRERETON'S NOCTURNALS BLAZE BACK ONTO COMICS RACKS IN SUMMER OF 2001

Oni Press is pleased to announce the July 2001 debut of a brand new NOCTURNALS miniseries. NOCTURNALS: THE DARK FOREVER, is a three-issue miniseries written and painted by Dan Brereton (GIANTKILLER, JLA: SEVEN CASKETS) and is the first full-length adventure to feature the characters since 1995's NOCTURNALS: BLACK PLANET (currently available as an Oni Press trade paperback).

Picking up six years from the close of the last story, the Nocturnals have disbanded and taken up personal missions. However, an ancient evil is rising from the depths of the sea just off the coast of Pacific City, and its threat is calling the team back home. So, from all corners of the Earth comes Doc Horror, Starfish, Firelion, Polychrome, Raccoon, Gunwitch, and Halloween Girl, to reform the Nocturnals and send the darkness back to its hellish source.

"The great thing about Dan's work is the way he plays with genre," said Oni Press editor Jamie S. Rich. "With NOCTURNALS, you get horror, crime, superheroes, adventure -- it's a blended version of all of Dan's influences. In less qualified hands, it would be a big mess, but itâs what Dan does naturally, and it's all part of the fun."
"Fans of the Nocturnals have been waiting a while for this," Brereton explained, "and I really wanted to give them the sort of thrills and danger that they've been missing. I couldn't just toss out any old story. I had to make it something that made it worth their time. So, the menace is more menacing, the chills more chilling, and the action is like a round of machine gun fire to the brain."

The publication of NOCTURNALS: THE DARK FOREVER also marks the first Oni Press limited series to be in full color.

"Previously, we have done one-shots and specials, and the occasional color gallery or one-color event," publisher Joe Nozemack said. "But at Oni, we don't want to play it safe. To just keep doing things on a one-time basis÷well, you don't have to stick all ten toes in the water to figure out the temperature. We figured it was time to take things forward, and we felt there was no safer bet than Dan. The kind of work he does, it's why color printing was invented in the first place."
"You don't find many independent companies willing to do creator-owned, painted books anymore," Brereton added. "Believe me, I've looked! But I've been pals with the guys from Oni for a long time, and they've always shown me they have a commitment to helping a creator bring his vision into focus, and we worked together to find a way to make the NOCTURNALS happen in a way that would make us both happy."
"We don't do any books that we canât throw ourselves into 100%," Rich concluded. "When youâre working with a creator of Dan Brereton's caliber, with characters as fun as the Nocturnals, and stories as exciting as THE DARK FOREVER, 1000% commitment is assured. The real question is how much over 100% the material is going to make us go!"

NOCTURNALS: THE DARK FOREVER #1 (of 3) retails for $2.95. Each issue has 32 pages of full color, painted story and new painted covers by Dan Brereton. The first issue ships to comic book stores on July 13, 2001.
